NEWESD 101 awarded regional nutrition grant

NEWESD 101 has been named the recipient of a $102,164 nutrition grant from the Spokane Regional Health District (SRHD).

The award will expand the geographic reach and depth of service offered by NEWESD 101’s Child Nutrition Cooperative. Services will include chef-led trainings for school nutrition staff, education on the availability fresh local produce, the purchase of small appliances in school kitchens and menu-planning assistance leading to more scratch-cooked meals.

Program beneficiaries will include Healing Lodge of the Seven Nations (Spokane) and the Columbia, Curlew, Evergreen, Harrington, Kettle Falls, Mary Walker, Northport, Onion Creek, Republic Selkirk, Sprague and Valley school districts.

The grant will be administered by Abby Miller and Kristy McGuire, who lead NEWESD 101’s regional child nutrition program. Now entering its third year, the program provides training and assistance to local schools on all aspects of nutrition, including purchasing, sourcing, nutrition analysis, special diets and recipes.

The grant is made possible through federal funds received by SRHD to promote healthier communities. NEWESD 101 is eligible to receive continuation awards in the same amount the next two years, pending the availability of federal funds.
