Belonging for Every Student: Regional Equity Summit 2022
Posted on 06/27/2022

BELONGING FOR EVERY STUDENT: Last week, NEWESD 101 partnered with Cheney Public Schools to host the first annual Regional Equity Summit. Approximately 191 northeast Washington educators gathered at Cheney High School to engage in learning opportunities focused on creating sustainable, equitable and inclusive systems for all students.

As the keynote presenter, Dr. Adeyemi Stembridge – an equity-focused school improvement consultant and author of “Culturally Responsive Education in the Classroom” – shared insights into navigating and measuring educational equity. “We will know we’ve accomplished equity when students’ backgrounds are no longer reliably predictive of school achievement.,” said Stembridge.

The event also featured several breakout sessions led by Jennifer LeBret and Apolonio Hernandez, Braided Education Consulting; Cree and Dr. Martina Whelshula, Swan Innovations; Stephanie Detrick, NEWESD 101’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports Implementation coordinator; Cheney School District’s Equity Committee; leadership teams from Valley School District and Lumen High School; and a panel of local high school students.

Elated with the success of the inaugural event, co-organizers Drs. Kelly Niccolls (Teaching & Learning, Cheney SD) and Rachel Eifler (Equity/School Improvement, NEWESD 101) look forward to planning the second annual Regional Equity Summit scheduled for June 21, 2023. Additionally, they are currently seeking regional districts to co-host and partner with next summer. Interested districts can contact Rachel at [email protected]
